Barack Obama

Barack Obama

Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to Barack Obama, Sr. (born in Nyanza Province, Kenya) and Ann Dunham (born in Wichita, Kansas). Barack Hussein Obama (born August 4, 1961) is the junior United States Senator from Illinois and a member of the Democratic Party.

Obama grew up in culturally diverse surroundings. He spent most of his childhood in the majority-minority U.S. state of Hawaii and lived for four years in Indonesia. Obama delivered the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention while still an Illinois state legislator. Since announcing his candidacy in February 2007, Obama has emphasized ending the Iraq War and implementing universal health care as campaign themes.

As a member of the Democratic minority in the 109th Congress, Obama co-sponsored the enactment of conventional weapons control and transparency legislation, and made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Obama's parents separated when he was two years old and later divorced. His father went to Harvard University to pursue Ph.D. studies, then returned to Kenya, where he died in an auto accident when the younger Obama was twenty-one years old.

Double Karma

Mahatma Gandhi's quote "Be the change you wish to see in the world" is paired with a pic of Barack Obama and his words "Change, Hope and Peace" and the date January 20, 2009, on Studio Vertu's stone coasters ($13) and magnets ($10), special to Proper Topper. Either would make a good way to mark the day with words to remember for this year and far beyond.

The Goods for Guys

Building a Better Wardrobe: I've seen a lot of guidance for women to complete a core of wardrobe essentials. I haven't seen much for men though. Any ideas on what would be included to make a guy's closet complete?

Holly Thomas: I just flipped through my desk copy of the "What Not to Wear" TV hosts' book, "Dress Your Best," and there's a decent number of pages dedicated to men's fashion. Details magazine and the website AskMen.com have both published menswear guides, and a quick Google search for "men's wardrobe essentials" turned up quite a few lists. I'd do a little book/online research and make a list of what seems to be missing from your wardrobe. Then hit up a few stores and try on those items -- just be sure to ask "Do I really see myself wearing this?" to make sure you're buying something you actually need.
